Face-to-Face with the London E-Prix – Friday Feelings

Parc Femme are continuing their in-person coverage of the ABB Formula E World Championship at the Hankook London E-Prix for Rounds 15 and 16 of Season 10. We joined the drivers at the media pen to find out how they are feeling going into this final race weekend of the season.

Jake Hughes:

Pedi: Does having an E-Prix on home soil change anything in your routine or excitement about the weekend?

Hughes: It doesn’t change anything in my routine, we prepare for every race exactly the same, but my excitement does change a bit. I’ve got my fiancé, family and friends coming as well so it feels a bit more special.

Pedi: You’ve had a successful season with McLaren, scoring your first podium. What would you consider the single most important factor on your FE Journey as you prepare for a third season?

Hughes: Understanding or accepting how much chaos there is. I come from Formula 3 and Formula 2, and it’s more of a normal style of racing or at least everyone understands that. Formula E is very different for the driver, and you have to accept that you are a complete newbie, you have to be willing to drop your ego to learn.

Pedi: If you could go back to the start of the season, what advice would you give yourself/tell yourself, knowing what you know now?

Hughes: I’d build a stronger front wing, that would be nice, because I would be sat on double to points I’m on now!  But I think stay calm in the bad and serious moments, there’s always the next race to look forward to.”

Sam Bird:

Pedi: If you could choose an existing track in Britain or go to a certain city, where would you like to see an E-Prix be held in the UK?

Bird: I reckon we could do better at a Bournemouth E-Prix around the city centre (laughs). If its not here, I think we can do better with the location and still be in London, but let’s see.

Pedi: If you could go back to the start of the season, what advice would you give yourself, knowing now what you know at the end of the year?

Bird: Take your hands off of the wheel.

Pedi: How is your hand now?

Bird: Yeah, its okay now! But obviously it cost me the best part of five races. That was frustrating, but it’s been encouraging.

Pedi: Does having an E-Prix on home soil change anything in your routine or your excitement?

Bird: It’s nice to race at home, I’ve got some family coming so that’s nice. It doesn’t change your mindset as you always want to go out there and score as many points as I can.

Pedi: You’re about to complete your first season with McLaren. There have been some highs and lows. How would you rate this year?

Bird: Pretty okay. I would have liked some more podiums and couple more wins, but I’ll take a win for now and see what the weekend brings.

Jake Dennis:

Chloe: How does it feel returning to the Excel after winning the world championship here last year?

Dennis: Yeah, it holds good memories. I’ve always had positive feelings coming here with obviously the race wins, podiums and the championship. It’s good to be back, and I’m hoping we can replicate a race win like in previous years.

Chloe: If you could go back to the start of the season, what advice would you give/tell yourself, knowing what you know now?

Dennis: To be prepared for a lot of bad days that will come, it’s been a difficult year this year which we maybe didn’t expect. But yeah, be prepared because its not going to be as easy as Season 9. Maybe as a team we though that we could replicate it, but in reality everyone’s moved forward.

Chloe: Are you looking forward to this weekend? Do you think you could win again?

Dennis: I could maybe win the race, but I can’t win the championship. I’ll try and if I can win the race then we’ll try and finish third in the constructors.
